How many kilos of "nuclear" mass did the bomb convert to energy ?




By the forumla E=mc^2.




Was the energy mainly thermal? Or kinetic? Or what?

Let's talk about hiroshima bomb.




U235 ---> fragment#1 + fragment#2 + ave 2.43 n + energy




Not sure what fragment produced by that bomb, in the experiments some produce fragment of Cs143 and Rb90, some experiment produce Ba144 and Kr89.




In hiroshima bomb in the design they used 10kg of U235, in order to sustain chain reaction, they need 2.43 neutron per fission, they need a critical mass of 52 g of U235, if less than 52g of U235 is used chain reaction will stop.




However only very small amount of mass is converted to energy.




Let's say the yield of hiroshima bomb is 12 kt of TNT




E = (12)(4.184E + 9 kJ) = 5.0208E + 10 kJ

E/m = C^2 = (299 792 458) ^ 2 = 8.987 551E + 16 kJ/kg

m = (5.0208E + 10) / (8.987 551E + 16)

m = 5.586E - 7 kg = 0.5586 mg




Only 0.5586 mg of U235 is converted to the measured 12 kt TNT energy.




The 12 kt of TNT energy is the total energy of radiation, heat, light, shock wave or whatever.
