Amazing Grace
18세기 영국의 노예선장이던 John Newton(1725~1807)은 폭풍으로 침몰위기에 놓인 뱃전에 무릎을 꿇고 '주여, 자비를 베푸소서'라고 울부짖었다. 나중에 노예무역에서 손을 씻고 목사가 된 그는 1772년에 'Amazing Grace'(놀라운 은총)라는 불멸의 노래를 지었다. 작곡자가 알려지지 않은 이 노래는 찬송가로 출발했지만, 그후 2백수십년을 이어오며 팝과 재즈의 장르에 까지 온갖 버전으로 불리는 세계의 민요로 자리 잡았다. 신의 은총을 찬양하는 경건한 노랫말과 아름다운 멜로디에 사람들은 마음의 평화와 생의 축복을 의탁하며 기꺼워 했다.

'Amazing Grace' - The Oak Ridge Boys

미국의 정상급 컨트리 중창단 The Oak Ridge Boys는 1945년에 조지아주 Oak Ridge라는 곳에서 결성된 후 주로 가스펠을 부르다가 1970년대 말부터 팝 컨트리 위주로 돌았다. 1981년의 'Elvira'(컨트리 1위/팝 5위)와 82년의 'Bobbie Sue'(1위/12위)등의 히트곡으로 한국에도 잘 알려졌다. 멤버는 바뀌어도 60여년을 꾸준히 이어오며 2006년에도 새 앨범을 펴냈다.

한국에도 많은 팬을 가진 나나 무스꾸리(1934~Greece)가 2005년 10월 처음이자 마지막 은퇴공연차 서울에 왔다. 전세계를 무대로 반세기에 걸쳐 15개국 언어로 1500곡을 녹음한 앨범 450장을 3억장 넘게 판 '가장 성공한 국제적 대형가수'는, 4각의 검은 뿔테안경에다 가운데로 가름마 탄 긴 검은 머리의 심벌을 끝까지 지닌채 내년까지의 마지막 세계투어를 돌고 있다.
