1950~60년대의 수퍼스타 냇 킹 콜(1917~1965 Alabama)은
재즈 피아니스트이자 팝 싱어로 팝 차트를 정복한 최초의 흑인이며 진정한 팝 발라드의 황제였다. 부드럽고 따뜻한 목소리와 순박한 미소의 그의
노래는, 엘비스 프레슬리와 비틀즈의 열풍속에서도 대중들의 뜨거운 갈채를 받았다. 1949년에 부른 그의 빅히트 넘버 'Mona Lisa'는
첫해에 300만장이라는 대기록을 이뤘고, 이후 오늘날 까지 그의 앨범은 매년 100만장씩 팔려나갈 정도로 꾸준한 인기를 이어가고 있다.
그래미상은 1990년에 평생공로상으로 그의 업적을 기렸다. 'Mona Lisa'는 그의 딸 나탈리 콜(1950~ LA)이 다시 불러 주목을
받았다. 아버지의 뒤를 이어 1975년에 데뷔한 나탈리 역시 성공한 팝싱어로 우뚝 섰고, 특히 1991년 아버지에게 헌정한 노래
'Unforgettable With Love'는 그 해에만 400만장을 팔면서 그래미상 7개부문을
휩쓸었다.

나탈리 콜의 1991년 빅히트 'Unforgettable With
Love' (아래 동영상)는 냇 킹 콜이 1951년에 불러 차트12위에 올렸던 'Unforgettable'을 다시 불러 바친 노래로, 그녀가
열다섯살일 때 48세 한창나이로 폐암이 앗아가 버린 아버지를 그리는 애절한 사랑을 담아 큰 감동을 주었다. 특히 40년전 아버지가 부르는 모습과
목소리를 겹쳐서 더빙(Overdubbing)하는 첨단기법으로 제작되어 화제가 되면서 더욱 인기를 모았다.
